Repairing & Maintaining
the UK’s Highway
Infrastructure

The UK’s roads, bridges, tunnels, and culverts form the backbone of national connectivity, supporting commerce, mobility, and everyday life. As this vital infrastructure continues to age amid increasing traffic volumes and heavier loads, the importance of effective highway maintenance and bridge repair has never been greater.

Recent bridge failures and major strengthening programmes around the world serve as a stark reminder of the critical need for proactive inspection, planned maintenance, and timely rehabilitation. Investing in the long-term performance of highway assets is essential to safeguarding public safety, maintaining network resilience, and extending asset service life.

All concrete highway structures are subject to deterioration over time. The most common causes include corrosion of steel reinforcement, chloride ingress, carbonation, and water penetration. In Northern Europe, the widespread use of de-icing salts during winter months significantly accelerates these deterioration mechanisms, increasing the risk of structural damage if left unaddressed.

Early identification, assessment, and treatment of defects are fundamental to ensuring that bridges, culverts, and tunnels remain structurally sound, durable, and compliant with their intended design life. A proactive approach to maintenance not only reduces long-term costs but also minimises disruption to the travelling public.

With over 70 years of experience, CRL is recognised as one of the UK’s leading specialists in the repair, strengthening, and refurbishment of highway structures. Our multidisciplinary teams bring together technical excellence, practical delivery expertise, and innovative thinking to provide robust, sustainable engineering solutions across the transport sector.

We offer a comprehensive service covering the full lifecycle of highway assets, from detailed condition surveys and inspections through to concrete rehabilitation, corrosion control, and structural strengthening. Through Early Contractor Involvement (ECI) and close collaboration with our clients, we ensure that solutions are developed efficiently, risks are effectively managed, and work is delivered safely with minimal disruption to road users.

All works on concrete structures are delivered in accordance with BS EN 1504, the European Standard for the repair and protection of concrete.

Our core services include:

  • Concrete Repair and Rehabilitation
Hand-applied repair mortars, sprayed concrete (gunite), and flowable self-compacting concrete solutions for minor- and large-volume structural restoration.
  • Corrosion Control and Protection
Design and installation of advanced cathodic protection systems & corrosion inhibitors to enhance durability, reduce deterioration rates, & minimise whole-life costs.
  • Structural Strengthening
Application of carbon fibre reinforced polymer (CFRP) systems and stainless-steel reinforcement to restore and enhance load-bearing capacity & structural performance.
  • Masonry Bridge and Tunnel Repair
Specialist strengthening and stabilisation using embedded stainless-steel anchors, resin grouting, and internal lining systems to improve waterproofing, integrity, and long-term resilience.

CRL’s reputation for quality, reliability, and technical excellence is reflected in our long-standing partnerships across the UK’s strategic road network. We currently hold National Highways SDF Framework agreements in Areas 1, 2, 7, 9, 10, and 12.

“Thank you and very well done in delivering the works at Helsby in such good time. We knew we wanted to take advantage of the reduced traffic levels recently, and you have pulled together to deliver the scheme in record time, well done! I visited the site recently and was really pleased to see the quality of the work being done, and the measures put in place to deliver the work safely, including of course all the necessary social distancing arrangements. Thanks very much, and well done again.”
