All concrete highway structures are subject to deterioration over time. The most common causes include corrosion of steel reinforcement, chloride ingress, carbonation, and water penetration. In Northern Europe, the widespread use of de-icing salts during winter months significantly accelerates these deterioration mechanisms, increasing the risk of structural damage if left unaddressed.
Early identification, assessment, and treatment of defects are fundamental to ensuring that bridges, culverts, and tunnels remain structurally sound, durable, and compliant with their intended design life. A proactive approach to maintenance not only reduces long-term costs but also minimises disruption to the travelling public.

All works on concrete structures are delivered in accordance with BS EN 1504, the European Standard for the repair and protection of concrete.
