Multi-Storey Car Parks Concrete Repair Coatings Membranes Cleaning & Preparation

The Royal Derby Hospital was officially opened on 1 April 2010 following a £334 million redevelopment of the former Derby City General Hospital and now provides state-of-the-art care to approximately one million patients each year. The multi-storey car park forms a critical part of the hospital estate and is located immediately adjacent to one of the main public entrances, making it a key operational asset. 

Given the age, exposure, and intensive use of the structure, targeted concrete repairs and waterproofing were required to maintain structural integrity, ensure user safety, and support long-term asset management objectives.

Concrete Repairs Ltd (CRL) completed the refurbishment of Car Park 2 at the Royal Derby Hospital, working for the main contractor, Skanska.

The refurbishment works focused on restoring the durability and performance of the exposed car park deck while minimising disruption to hospital operations. The existing deck coating was fully removed to allow detailed inspection and effective surface preparation. Localised concrete repairs were then carried out to the exposed deck to address defects and reinstate the structural surface prior to waterproofing. These concrete repairs were undertaken using proven repair techniques appropriate for heavily trafficked parking structures, ensuring compatibility with the existing substrate and long-term performance in a demanding environment.

Following repairs, approximately 1,800 square metres of Triflex ProPark HD deck waterproofing was applied. This high-performance system was selected to provide robust protection against water ingress, chlorides, and general wear associated with vehicle movements. At the same time, deck joints were re-sealed using WF250 and S100 Radflex expansion joints, maintaining continuity of the waterproofing system while accommodating structural movement.

To preserve the integrity of the new deck membrane, vehicle barriers and cycle shelters were temporarily removed and carefully re-fixed following completion of the waterproofing works. The project presented logistical challenges due to restricted access and its proximity to a main hospital entrance. Deliveries were therefore undertaken outside normal hours, and installation works were programmed for early mornings during the height of summer to manage temperature-sensitive application requirements. Close collaboration with Skanska and the hospital Estates department enabled the programme to be completed safely and efficiently within a six-week period, demonstrating CRL’s experience in structural repairs UK and live healthcare environments.

The refurbishment strategy placed strong emphasis on long-term protection and durability beyond the immediate concrete repairs. Comprehensive surface preparation and the removal of the existing deck coating ensured that all repairs and waterproofing systems were applied to a sound, clean substrate. The Triflex ProPark HD system provides a seamless, resilient waterproof membrane that protects the reinforced concrete deck from water penetration and aggressive agents, significantly reducing the risk of future deterioration and corrosion.

Re-sealing the expansion joints with compatible systems ensured continuity of protection across movement interfaces, maintaining the performance of the deck under daily traffic loading. By temporarily removing and reinstating vehicle barriers and cycle shelters, the integrity of the protective membrane was preserved. Collectively, these measures support reduced maintenance requirements, improved resilience, and an extended service life for the car park structure, aligning with best practice in concrete repairs and long-term asset management.
