Water Industry Membranes Cleaning & Preparation

CRL recently completed a critical repair and refurbishment project on an above-ground water tank at a distribution service reservoir, constructed in 1980. The circular tank, with a 49-metre diameter and domed concrete roof, forms an essential component of the water distribution network, ensuring reliable storage and supply.

Inspections in February 2021 revealed multiple defects, including deteriorated roof coatings, cracked access hatches, and compromised drainage, which threatened the long-term durability and safety of the asset.

CRL was commissioned to deliver comprehensive repairs and waterproofing solutions to restore the structural integrity and functionality of the reservoir, while providing a durable, long-term solution that supports ongoing asset management objectives.

Services undertaken

  • External roof covering removal and replacement
  • Application of Triflex ProTect fully bonded waterproofing system
  • Perimeter coating removal and installation of anti-skid walkway
  • Triflex ProDetail application to access hatch areas
  • Central dome crack over-banding and reinforced membrane overlay
  • Substrate testing and preparation (adhesion and cohesion tests)
  • Internal joint overbanding replacement
  • Concrete repairs and refurbishment of internal surfaces
  • Installation of safety gratings
  • Cleaning and disinfection of internal tank surfaces
  • Design and erection of bespoke scaffolding for full access
Tailored tools for every job

The refurbishment works encompassed both external and internal interventions. Externally, the existing roof covering was entirely removed and replaced with a Triflex ProTect fully bonded PMMA membrane system, designed to meet a 20-year service life. Perimeter coatings that had delaminated and posed safety risks were stripped and overlaid with an anti-skid, reinforced walkway solution. Access hatch areas were treated with Triflex ProDetail to ensure robust adhesion and waterproofing. At the same time, the central dome was jet-washed, cracks were over-banded with high-tensile-strength reinforcement fleece, primed, and overlaid with the reinforced ProTect system. A liquid thixo agent facilitated even application on sloped surfaces without compromising rapid curing.

Internally, CRL undertook joint overbanding replacement, concrete repairs, cleaning, and disinfection, supported by bespoke scaffolding that provided full access to the tank circumference. Safety gratings were installed to enhance operational safety, and work sequencing was carefully planned to meet programme requirements. Extensive substrate testing, including adhesion and cohesion assessments, informed the selection of Triflex products and application methodology. Collaboration with Triflex and CRL’s experienced workforce ensured all repairs were executed to the highest technical standard, restoring both the structural integrity and operational functionality of the reservoir.

"The team did a fantastic job refurbishing the water tank, using Fosroc and Triflex systems for top-notch results. Their skill, attention to detail, and on-time delivery reflected our commitment to the job!"

Beyond addressing the immediate defects, the refurbishment enhanced the reservoir's long-term resilience, safety, and performance. CRL’s application of high-performance PMMA coatings and reinforced overbanding minimised the risk of water ingress, chemical attack, and structural deterioration, extending the asset’s service life.

Meticulous surface preparation and testing ensured the waterproofing system adhered reliably, reducing future maintenance requirements and supporting proactive asset management. The project also improved operational safety by installing anti-skid surfaces and upgrading internal access provisions.

CRL’s careful planning, technical expertise, and innovative use of advanced materials delivered a durable, sustainable solution that safeguards critical infrastructure and supports an uninterrupted water supply for decades to come.
