Multi-Storey Car Parks Concrete Repair Corrosion Control Membranes Cleaning & Preparation

Preston Station forms a key part of the West Coast Mainline and was included in a Network Rail upgrade programme covering 17 stations, with a strong focus on improving parking infrastructure. As part of this investment, a new-build car park was developed to enhance capacity, safety and user experience for rail passengers.

Arup Consulting was appointed by Network Rail to produce the outline designs, including a high-performance deck membrane specification. The project required a durable, skid-resistant and visually coherent deck surfacing system that aligned with corporate branding and modern safety standards, while supporting Network Rail’s wider asset management objectives.

Tailored tools for every job

The decking works at Preston MSCP were delivered as part of the wider station upgrade, with Galliford Try appointed as the main contractor and CRL engaged as the specialist subcontractor for deck surfacing. CRL was selected due to its approved applicator status for the BASF Conideck deck membrane system, ensuring full compliance with the specified materials and installation standards. The Conideck system was chosen to protect the concrete decks, provide long-term waterproofing, and deliver enhanced skid resistance suitable for a high-traffic rail environment.

A key aspect of the project was the bespoke colour specification. Network Rail required the deck membrane to be produced in colours aligned with the corporate identity of Virgin, who manage the West Coast Mainline. This necessitated close coordination between the client, manufacturer and CRL to ensure accurate colour matching without compromising performance. Four distinct colours were incorporated into the deck finishes, with high-visibility traffic yellow used to clearly define pedestrian walkways and improve user safety.

The Conideck membrane was applied as a continuous system across the deck areas, delivering a seamless finish that integrates waterproofing and anti-slip properties in a single solution. Numbered parking spaces were incorporated as part of the Safer Parking Scheme administered by the British Parking Association, improving wayfinding and user confidence. CRL’s technical expertise in deck surfacing and protective systems ensured the works were delivered efficiently, with consistent quality across all areas. Their ability to work within a multi-disciplinary rail environment demonstrates a strong understanding of infrastructure interfaces and long-term performance requirements.

Although the works focused on deck resurfacing rather than structural intervention, long-term protection of the concrete decks was central to the design. The BASF Conideck membrane provides a durable waterproof barrier that limits water ingress and protects the underlying concrete from deterioration associated with freeze-thaw cycles and trafficking. Integrated skid resistance enhances safety while reducing surface wear, supporting reduced maintenance over the life of the asset.

The use of colour-coded finishes improves traffic management and pedestrian segregation, helping to minimise accidental damage and prolong surface performance. By installing a proven deck protection system applied by an approved specialist contractor, Network Rail has secured a resilient and low-maintenance solution. CRL’s precise application of the Conideck system contributes directly to extended service life, improved user safety and effective long-term asset management for this important transport facility.
