Rail Concrete Repair Grouting & Injection Projects

The Channel Tunnel is a piece of vital international infrastructure linking the UK and mainland Europe, officially opened in May 1994 following eight years of construction. Operated by Groupe Eurotunnel SA, the tunnel carries high volumes of passenger and freight traffic 24 hours a day and is fundamental to cross-border connectivity.

By 2010, ongoing wear, water ingress and localised concrete deterioration required a structured, long-term maintenance approach. CRL was appointed to a framework contract to deliver planned civil maintenance works, ensuring the tunnel’s structural integrity, operational safety and continued performance under exceptionally demanding operating conditions.

Services undertaken

  • Framework civil maintenance delivery

  • Resin injection to tunnel lining cracks

  • Concrete repairs to tunnel trackbed

  • Planned works during engineering hours and possessions

  • Programming and coordination with Eurotunnel

  • Operation of Schoma rail vehicles

  • Certified Chef de Chantier supervision

  • Ongoing condition assessment and maintenance support

Tailored tools for every job

Delivering concrete repairs and sealing works within the Channel Tunnel demands exceptional planning, discipline and technical competence. With trains operating continuously, all non-emergency activities must be undertaken during tightly controlled engineering hours, typically between 01:00 and 05:00 at weekends. During these periods, one running tunnel is taken out of service while traffic is diverted through the adjacent tunnel, creating a narrow operational window in which all works must be completed safely and efficiently.

Programming is therefore critical. CRL worked closely with Eurotunnel to plan each activity up to six weeks in advance, defining the scope, methodology and resources required for every possession. Regular coordination meetings were held to assess readiness and eliminate uncertainty. If any element of the planned works was not fully assured, the possession were cancelled, underlining the importance of preparedness and collaboration.

A key element of the works involved resin injection to cracks within the tunnel linings to control water ingress and protect the structural concrete. Significant volumes of resin were injected to reduce water flow and maintain a dry, serviceable environment. In parallel, CRL undertook concrete repairs to the trackbed, where repeated high-pressure cleaning over many years had eroded weaker surface layers. These repairs were particularly sensitive due to the presence of signalling cables beneath the concrete, where reduced cover can interfere with wireless communications.

To operate independently within possessions, CRL maintained a workforce trained and certified as Schoma drivers and Chefs de Chantier. This capability allowed full self-sufficiency during maintenance windows and ensured works were executed to programme, supporting the safe and reliable operation of this critical asset.

“The project is being handled in a professional manner, and the works completed to the highest standard.”

Phil Edwards | Senior Engineer | Groupe Eurotunnel SA

The framework approach adopted at the Channel Tunnel delivered value far beyond individual repair interventions. Through proactive concrete repairs, resin injection and careful programming, CRL supported Eurotunnel’s long-term asset management strategy, extending service life while minimising disruption to operations.

Effective water control and reinstatement of trackbed concrete improved durability and reduced the need for reactive maintenance. CRL’s disciplined planning, certified workforce and close collaboration with the client ensured works were delivered safely within restricted possessions, maintaining operational continuity.

This sustained partnership demonstrates CRL’s capability in delivering complex structural repairs and protecting internationally significant infrastructure through consistent quality, resilience and professionalism.
