The Durbar Wing of Osborne House on the Isle of Wight is a historically significant asset, originally constructed between 1845 and 1851 as a private residence for Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. Designed in the Italianate style to complement its panoramic views of the Solent, Osborne House has served multiple roles over its history, including a convalescent home and naval college. The Durbar Wing required urgent restorative works due to aging fabric, structural deterioration, and the need to preserve original architectural features.
CRL Restoration was commissioned under open tender to carry out a comprehensive programme in partnership with the English Heritage Trust and restoration architects Ptolemy Dean. The contract, initially planned for 20 weeks at £595k, extended to 28 weeks with a final value of £1.05 million due to the expanded scope of works.

CRL Restoration employed a carefully sequenced approach to maintain the historical integrity of the Durbar Wing while implementing modern structural repair techniques. The slate roof was removed and replaced, incorporating bespoke lead work to ensure weatherproofing and longevity. Structural cracks were addressed using precision stitching techniques to restore tensile integrity, while lime-based stucco render repairs preserved the breathability and authenticity of the building envelope.
Timber elements were repaired or replaced, and asphalt surfaces renewed to maintain access and durability. Lightning protection systems were upgraded to meet contemporary safety standards. All surfaces were prepared meticulously prior to the application of lime wash coatings and decorative redecoration to maintain the historic aesthetic.
CRL’s team coordinated closely with heritage architects, ensuring all interventions met conservation standards while employing advanced materials and methods to achieve structural resilience and visual fidelity.
